 Fouad Ajami, The Arab Predicament – Arab Political Though and Practice Since 1967.  Cambridge Univ. Press, 1993. An excellent analysis of Egyptian internal dilemmas. See also Michael Anbar’s essay on the “Roadmap to Peace”.

 Fouad Ajami, The Dream Palace of the Arabs: A Generation's Odyssey. Pantheon 1998. Hope mistaken, faith misplaced; an intellectual history of Arabs with a masterly final chapter on the Arab intellectual class' rejection of the Oslo process.

 Mitchel G. Bard, Myths and Facts. AICE,  2nd Edition, 2002. A question and answer book on major issues. The facts are generally quite accurate. See also Mitchel G. Bard, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Middle East Conflict. Alpha Books, 1999 A funny book with lots of serious facts on Israel.

 Bat Ye’or, Islam and Dhimimitude – Where Civilizations Collide. Fairleigh Dickenson Univ. Press, 2002. An account by the historian who coin the term “Dhimimitude”. An answer to those who claim that the Arab-Jewish conflict started with the creation of the Jewish state. Meron Benvenishti, Intimate Enemies - Jews and Arabs in a Shared Land. Univ. of California Press 1995. A thoughtful book by a well meaning Israeli, pointing out several political mistakes of Israel. Like Benny Morris also Benvenishti may have changed some of his views in the face of recent developments.

 Uzi Benziman, Sharon – An Israeli Caesar. Adama Book, New York, 1985. A reporter’s critical biography. See "In defense of Ariel Sharon"

 Barry Chamish, The Last Days of Israel. Dandelion Books, Az, 2001. An extreme right wing account of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

 Raymond Cohen, Culture and Conflict in Egyptian-Israeli Relations: A Dialogue of the Deaf. Indiana Univ. Press 1990. Very interesting case that the main problem facing negotiators was not "irreconcilable interests, megalomaniac ambitions, still less soaring ideals, but a cultural chasm."

 Alan Dershowitz, Why Terrorism Works – Understanding the Threat, Responding to the Challenge. Yale Univ. Press, 2002. The title speak for itself and so does the author.

 David Fromkin, A Peace to End All Peace – The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East. Owl Books, H. Holt, 2001. A critical comprehensive historical analysis of the 1914 to 1922 period.

 Shlomo Gazit, The Carrot and the Stick: Israel's Policy in Judaea and Samaria, 1967-68. An insider's account of the improvised origins of what has become a lengthy rule.

 Martin Gilbert, Israel – a history. W. Morrow 1998. An extensive History of the State of Israel written by a non-Jewish staunch friend. See also: Martin Gilbert, Jerusalem in the Twentieth Century. Wiley, 1996. and: Martin Gilbert, The Routledge Atlas of the Arab-Israeli Conflict. Routledge (Taylor & Francis) 7th Edition 2002,

 Sander Gilman and Steven Katz Eds. Anti-Semitism in Times of Crisis. Ney York University Press, 1991. A highly instructive collection of essays by well qualified academicians. Should be read with the exellent exhaustive documentation of Richard S. Levy Antisemitism in the Modern World – An Anthology of Texts. D. C. Heath 1991.

 Y. Harkabi, Arab Attitudes to Israel. I.B. Tauris, London, 1988. Over three decades old but still the edifying if depressing standard work on the subject. It would seem that little has changed. See also Y. Harkabi, Israel's Fateful Hour, Harper & Row, 1989

 Yoram Hazony, The Jewish State : The Struggle for Israel's Soul. An inquiry into the intellectual roots of Israel's Oslo folly.

 Efraim Karsh, Fabricating Israeli History: The 'New Historians'. Frank Cass, London, 2000. Stinging and effective rebuttal to the Israeli scholars who have adopted the Palestinian narrative.

 Baruch Kimmerling and Joel S. Migdal, Palestinians: The Making of a People. Harvard Univ. Press 1994. An overview of Palestinian history advocating the existence of a Palestinian people.

 David A. Korn, Assassination in Khartoum. Detailed and compelling analysis of one incident - the 1973 murder of two American diplomats by Palestinians - that still remains an alive issue.

 Jacob M. Landau, The Arab Minority in Israel, 1967-1991: Political Aspects. Best book on the question many analysts see as the hardest part of the Arab-Israeli conflict to resolve.

 Bernard Lewis, The Middle East, A Brief History of the Last 2000 Years. Scribner, 1995. An authoritative historic overview of a renown Islamist.

Anita Miller, Jordan Miller, Sigalit Zetouni, Sharon -- Israel's Warrior Politician. Academic Chicago Publishers, 2002. A politically inspired biography. See Review.

 Benny Morris, Righteous Victims – The history of the Zionist-Arab Conflict 1881-1999. A. Knopf, 1999. The “unconventional” view of the Israeli “New Historians” on the conlict, but see change in Benny Morris’ views in 2002. See also, Karsh’s book (above).

Joan Peters, From Time Immemorial – The Origins of the Arab-Jewish Conflict over Palestine, Harper and Row 1984, JKAP Publications, 2002. A strongly pro-Israeli account that has been criticized by some. See also Michael Anbar’s “Non-Negotiable Points”, “Isreal’s Right to Exist” and “Do they understand what Zionism is all about?”

Itamar Rabinovich, The Road Not Taken: Early Arab-Israeli Negotiations. Convincing account finds that no matter what Israel did, it could not have closed down the conflict early on.

Barry Rubin, Revolution Until Victory? The Politics and History of the PLO. Harvard Univ. Press 1994. Picks up roughly where Shemesh leaves off and in more readable form reviews three decades' worth of PLO complexities. See also "A Letter to a sensible Palestinian"

Barry Rubin and Judith Colp Rubin Eds., Anti American Terrorism and the Middle East – Understanding the Violence. –Oxford Univ. Press, 2002. A documentary reader, a must for anyone who wishes to understand first hand what is going on now.

Danny Rubinstein, The Mystery of Arafat. Light but highly insightful; not a biography but a deliberation.

Howard M. Sachar, A History of Israel, 2 vols. A standard account, readable and engrossing.

Tom Segev, One Palestine Complete - Jews and Arabs Under the British Mandate. Henry Holt &Co, New York, 1999. Another "new history" of the Jewish state; see  Efraim Karsh's book above.

Moshe Shemesh, The Palestinian Entity, 1959-1974: Arab Politics and the PLO. Frank Cass, 1988. Scholarly and tough going, but full of information and deep understanding.

Ariel Sharon and David Chanoff. Warrior – an Autobiography. A personal account of Israel Prime Minister. See also Michael Anbar’s essay “In defense of Ariel Sharon”.

Avi Shlaim, War and Peace in the Middle East. Penguin 1995. A very concise anti-Zionist account of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Unlike Benny Morris, Shlaim maintains his anti-Israeli stance up to date.

Steven L. Spiegel, The Other Arab-Israeli Conflict. Excellent history of the U.S. involvement, up to 1984.

Fawaz Turki, Exile's Return: The Making of a Palestinian American. A moving and insightful account of one Palestinian's experience.

Geoffrey Wigoder, ed., New Encyclopedia of Zionism and Israel. A  reference book, reliable and complete.

Robert S. Wistrich, Demonizing the Other – Antisemitism, Racism and Xenophobia. Harwood Academic Publishers, 1999.  Like Almog’s book (above), this is an uptodate excellent collection of essays by highly qualified academicians. See also Robert S.
