Dear Friends,

Since my last letter we all experienced the pain of the Columbia catastrophe and the tragic loss of seven brave astronauts, including Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli to join this ambitious scientific endeavor. Israel must be proud being one of the few countries that developed space technology on its own and could, therefore, contribute meaningful expertise to NASA's mission.

Because of its geopolitical site the State of Israel has been and happens to be again in the line of fire in coming war against Iraq. Only this time Israel must brace itself to the possibility of being a target for Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.

In my last letter I talked about anti-Semitism in Europe and Canada. This problem is still with us. It only became more acute in the interim.

Recent articles posted document the anti-Jewish hate in Europe, championed by the Left, academia, and in the Arab countries under the influence of Wahabism. There is also the abuse of children raised to hate Jews.  The UN does not condemn these human rights abuses for its ulterior motives. As I stated in my last letter, the immediate danger to Israel is not primarily from the UN.  Much more serious might be political pressure from the Arabophils in the US Department State and from the American leftist politicians and media. These must be responded to from the legal and ethical-historical standpoints. Fortunately we have the support of a sizable part of the American Christian population. The state of Israel will also have the tacit support of the Arab Christian community oppressed by the “Palestinian Authority”. During this period we also posted two emotion loaded articles from Israel. There are also many other articles from all over the world worth reading.

Our efforts in the near future will have to devoted to support the State of Israel, hoping that the new Israeli government after the recent elections will be united and sturdy enough to withstand the forthcoming political and economical tough times. Its mission will be to guarantee the existence of the Jewish state for generations. The major problem of Israel will remain political – the potential establishment of a new Arab state west of the Jordan River that is likely to become a stepping stone for the Arab desire to eventually annihilate the Jewish homeland.

Just to draw your attention to a new quite revealing article about Oriana Fallaci an outspoken proponent of freedom and a friend of the Jewish people.

Next I wish to tell you about a new section "On the campus front" which we are starting to post on this website, in view of the strong anti-Israeli activity taking place in campuses all over the world.

Mr. Edgar M. Brofman

President

World Jewish Congress

Jerusalem

Dear Mr. Bronfman:

I am deeply distressed to see in Washington Post of April 30, that you have endorsed full heartedly Secretary Powell’s Roadmap. I fully agree with the position of your Mr. Isi Leibler, Senior WP of the WJC, that the Road Map, designed by compromises of the State Department with enemies of Israel and of the USA, is potentially a roadmap for disaster for the Jewish nation. Those compromises might have been in the interest of the US at the time, but should be null and void today, after the exposure of the treacheries of France and Russia.

The latest developments in the PA demonstrate that the bloodshed of Jews will not stop.  Any concessions and pressure on Israel will encourage rather than discourage Arab violence. Anyone who has followed Arab political behavior in recent years will agree with this prediction. President Bush’s speech of June 24, 2002 was quite constructive. However, the Arabs have shown no indication that they are paying attention (not lip service!) to the conditions spelled out explicitly the President of the US.  The roadmap is, therefore, dated and should be replaced by another plan for peace initiated solely by the US, in line with President Bush’s points, with no intervention by the French or Russians, who do have a very different agenda.

I have been member and supporter of the WJC for years, but I cannot continue my membership in an organization that does not have in mind the best interests of the State of Israel, as well as of the USA (at this point in time). The WJC could have remained neutral on this issue, if its presidency did not feel that it should oppose this potentially anti-Israeli initiative. But to come out to oppose in public the majority of the US Congress, which has much more insight into this issue, as well as the majority of the Jewish people, is too much for me to bear.

If the WJC wanted to take a public position on this issue, it should have poled its membership like any democratic organization and not tried to arbitrarily undermine the position of the majority of our nation.

So please accept my resignation and I hope that many other members of the WJC will do the same.

Sincerely,

Prof. Michael Anbar
